Basic gameplay is pretty stock standard for the genre — gather resources, build armies, research technology trees, build alliances or wage war, all with the goal of ensuring your people stay on top of the food chain. As in the first Empire Earth, the normal skirmish mode sees you taking one of 14 civilisations through a few thousand years of history.
The game has 15 different epochs to move through, starting from the Stone Age all the way through the near future. Each civilisation has its own unique strengths and weaknesses, and each different epoch heralds new advances in technology and warfare that can be utilised.
You can also take Skirmish mode online to play against up to 10 human opponents. As with the first Empire Earth, the sequel bases itself on the history of our planet from a very early stage in human development. In one game you can actually see your civilization rise from shooting arrows and poking each other with sticks to shooting lasers and poking each other with nuclear bombs.
The campaigns in general are awesome. Some of the mission design is really, really good and none of the missions call for every last one of the enemies to be dead, which is a huge blessing considering the size of some of these maps.
In fact, some of the time, missions will only charge you with taking over a set number of territories to win and push whatever invading army it was back into the hinterlands. This is the original version of the game, it contains some compatibility patches and additional content, but does not alter the original gameplay.
Please note that if you install a mod and want to play with players online, they must also have them installed in some cases. The version of the game in the main menu should match for everyone or you will have an error.
This version includes a multiplayer lobby that allows you to play with other players, as it was possible to do before on the WON lobby of Sierra On-Line.
