Ground breaking in its time, the black and white film captures the essence of the conflict. The makers have admitted that not all footage is contemporary, and some footage shot for the original “All quiet on the Western Front” is included in the film and a number of original battle scenes are used more than once.
That said, film crews were not that common in and the produces had limited material to work with and that obviously dictated the stories and events covered. The overall quality of the series is very high, however I could not give it a flawless 5 stars because I feel that the final year of the war is too rushed and the sequencing of one or two of the later episodes, covering the Middle East and the Balkans does not fit too well with the progression.
Never the less, this is a valuable series and is worth watching and owning. The great war again better than my video. If you are seeking a dispassionate record in film of The Great War , to add to your DVD collection, then look no further.
With spine-tingling introduction music, and the commentary done so ably by Sir Michael Redgrave, this production looks and sounds surprisingly timeless. I especially enjoyed watching the clips of veterans describing some of the scenes they witnessed.
At the time of production in the early s, they all looked and sounded by then comfortably middle-aged. So here it is, divided into six DVDs, with a bonus DVD, all packed into the usual, individual plastic cases all inside a cardboard library box. Hailed in the trade today as one of the greatest TV documentary series ever made, but surprisingly seldom seen for all that.
Grab your chance to see it while you can. The images come in the standard aspect: Transferred from the original hand-cranked cine camera films of those days they do have a tendency to pixilate from time to time, which is unfortunate. Probably I guess because of the lower bit rate necessary to fit the episodes to the discs. This is only a minor point and should not put one off buying the series. This collection is a ‘must have’ for the history nut. If you can afford it, you won’t regret buying it.
