How has licensing changed? Microsoft separated exchange and server on the SBS and the new Essentials doesn’t include Exchange.

Windows Server Essentials vs Standard

This solution provides a way to create a highly scalable software-defined storage unit with basic features of a traditional SAN or NAS, all while still staying within your budget. The technology relies on industry-standard servers with local-attached drives, and includes features such as caching, storage tiers, and erasure coding.

There are two deployment options available: hyper-converged and converged, which greatly simplifies the deployment process. This technology enables you to upgrade the operating system of cluster nodes without needing to stop the Hyper-V or Scale-Out File Server workloads that are running on the nodes. Put differently, this is a way to help minimize if not fully avoid downtimes. This functionality requires neither any additional hardware to use, nor the presence of a new cluster, and the upgrade process can be reversed unless you choose the “point-of-no-return”.

This edition is a good choice for companies with small-to-medium IT infrastructure that are seeking a robust and efficient system. As the name implies, the Datacenter Edition suits companies with heavy workloads, large virtual infrastructures, and high IT requirements. To further maximize efficiency, set up a schedule of your backup jobs to ensure that you avoid overlaps and reduce the risks from manual handling.

At the time of release, Windows Server provided the market with quite a wide range of new features. These include new functionality to enhance virtualization, administration, networking, security, storage efficiency, and so on.

The release became a full-fledged solution which offered a smooth, hassle-free experience to its users. The difference between Windows Server Standard and Datacenter editions becomes particularly evident when it comes to virtualization, storage replication, containers a lightweight alternative to VMs , and inherited activation functionality. The Standard Edition is an optimal choice for infrastructures with comparatively low IT requirements.

In turn, the Datacenter Edition is in place to satisfy expectations at the enterprise level. Most possibly, we may not find the Essentials edition for the future generations of Windows Server. The Windows Server Essentials would be the last option, and next year onwards, you would only find Standard or Datacentre editions only. If you are a small business, you can opt for other solutions like Microsoft or similar other services. The comparison chart for the best features offered by Windows Server Essentials and Windows Server Standard would be helpful enough to understand them in a better manner.

Looking at the features and the functionalities offered by each of those options, it would be wiser enough to go with Windows Server Standard editions, whether you are a small business or a medium one. While the Essentials edition had its own advantages for a firm that does not need more than 25 users, things have changed considerably. The Essential edition has just remained a poor shadow of what had once been Windows Server Essentials. Those were a few inputs into the significant differences between Windows Server Essentials and Windows Server Standard editions.

Do note that this would perhaps be the last version that you would find the Essentials edition on Windows Server.

Next year onwards, you would either need to go with the other cloud products or choose the older versions of Windows Server like Windows Server Essentials.

The capabilities of Windows Server have been deprecated to a considerable extent when you compare it to the Windows Server Essentials. Having understood that, we would suggest you opt for the Windows Server Standard itself no matter whether you require fewer than 25 users or even more than that. Unless budget is not a considerable constraint for you, choose to go with Windows Server Standard edition, thanks to the additional features and functions that it tends to provide you.
